There is a wonderful view where ever I look. Off my balcony it's a mountain and fynbos and from the bar I can gaze out on a beautiful, but ominous looking sea. I was here a year ago - and that tells me how quickly time passes. When you have to give up your time for legal meetings its always best to arrive early - if of course the setting is the Cape. It's the AGM of the LSSA - which is the Law Society of South Africa. I left a rainy Johannesburg behind today and now, in the darkness of my balcony somewhere between Camps Bay and Hout Bay, I am enjoying a warm wind. Its no surprise that so many retiring attorneys look for a home along these shores - the Cape has never been short of beauty. I'll keep my comments focused on that tonight because the profession continues to disappoint. The politics seem to win over what is right quite often - or too often - and that is so terribly sad for our future. I am not one of those who ducks work - as my numerous articles and writings show, but there is only so much you can do when up against those with agendas which have nothing to do with what is in the interest of the profession. Nights like tonight though show, as I know, that there is so much more out there that is more important to me.
